Creativity and New Media

New media fosters creativity by letting you not only believe in your ability to create on your own terms, but it also gives you an audience for whatever niche you may have. New media doesn’t have the same barriers as traditional or “old media,” you can create your own blog instead of having to be approved by newspapers to share your writing. You can film your own videos on youtube instead of chasing production companies to share your videos. And, in my case, you can post on Instagram to share your photography easily and at any level (no need to spend years in training or money on expensive equipment.)

I wouldn’t go so far as to call myself a photographer but new media, and Instagram in particular gives me the ability to be creative in the pictures I take and share them openly. In fact, since it is such an accessible platform that fosters creativity, I’ve been able to create multiple accounts to share the different aspects of my life. One of those aspects is the very recent adoption of my dog, Mia. Using new media I’ve been able to share pictures of her new life with me and flex my creative muscles in many ways. I can explore different angles or styles of taking pictures, decide what would be a fun or cute memory to share, and I can even write the captions in my dog's voice. While usually, the idea of a platform for a dog can be a bit silly, it allows me to share my journey with a new furry friend through pictures and flex my creative bone, it’s fun to think about what would make good content and find new ways of “seeing the world” through my new pet’s eyes.

  1. I can totally relate. I have Instagram page for my dog as well and I like writing post from my dog point. I do not thing that creating a platform for a dog is silly, I think that way you can get to express more your thoughts and more creative.
